Digital transformation often feels like disruption, risk, and fatigue, but is there a smarter way forward?

In this episode of Incremental Edge, Emma Pownall and Tim Purcell explore digital evolution, a people-first, incremental approach that builds momentum and unlocks sustainable business growth.

When I spoke with my colleague and fellow exec at Datel, Tim Purcell, one theme kept coming back: business leaders are tired of hearing about digital transformation. The phrase suggests disruption, huge projects, and high risk. And while sometimes a reset is necessary, it’s not always the smartest path.

Tim’s perspective on digital evolution really struck me. Instead of ripping everything out and starting again, evolution is about smaller, strategic steps - changes that are people-first, less disruptive, and far more sustainable. It’s an approach that mirrors how successful businesses grow: steadily, with momentum building over time.

Three takeaways stood out for me from our conversation:

  • Know where you are today. Are your systems “good enough” to evolve, or do you need a transformation step first?

  • Think incrementally. Quick wins, tested and scaled, add up faster than long, risky overhauls.

  • Remember people and culture. Without buy-in, even the best tech won’t deliver lasting results.

For me, this conversation confirmed that transformation and evolution both have a place - but for most businesses, it’s evolution that unlocks real progress.
